Sarinah and Mangkunegaran Present Anungsung Sura

Celebrating the Beginning of the Javanese Year and Revitalizing Cultural Heritage in Public Spaces

Jakarta, 27 June 2025 — To welcome 1 Sura Dal 1959 in the Javanese calendar, Sarinah in collaboration with Pura Mangkunegaran presents Anungsung Sura Mangkunegaran, a cultural celebration bringing authentic Javanese traditions into a public space. The event runs from 26 June to 6 July 2025 at the Ground Floor of Sarinah Thamrin.

Visitors are invited to experience the distinctive atmosphere of malam 1 Sura (the eve of 1 Sura) through cultural installations, macapatan recitations, Javanese songs rich in wisdom and philosophy, and classical gamelan music performed live by artists from Mangkunegaran, Surakarta.

President Director of PT Sarinah, Raisha Syarfuan, explained that this collaboration is part of Sarinah’s effort to deliver meaningful cultural experiences to the public.

“This event is part of Sarinah’s Transformation 2.0 to become a cultural center that unites traditional heritage with modern public spaces. We want the people of Jakarta and surrounding areas to experience the solemnity of 1 Sura without having to travel to Surakarta. This spirit of collaboration also aligns with Sarinah’s mission as a grand home for Indonesian culture,” said Raisha.

In Javanese tradition, Sura is not merely the first month of the Javanese calendar—it symbolizes reflection, spirituality, and respect for life’s values. It is seen as a time to withdraw and realign oneself. This tradition has been preserved and celebrated for generations in the royal courts (keraton) and pura across Java, including Pura Mangkunegaran in Surakarta. This collaboration offers a way to bring that rich heritage closer to urban communities.

Through Anungsung Sura, Sarinah reinforces its new role as a space not just for shopping but as a meeting point for values, culture, and shared experiences.

“As part of its journey to become a cultural center, Sarinah will continue to build collaborations with various cultural institutions across Indonesia, turning retail spaces into a living stage for Nusantara’s culture,” Raisha added.

Sarinah invites the public to come and experience the meaningful atmosphere of 1 Sura through Anungsung Sura Mangkunegaran at the Ground Floor of Sarinah Thamrin.

The Anungsung Sura cultural installation is open to the public daily from 26 June to 6 July 2025, from 10:00 to 22:00 West of Indonesia Time.
